About me
Mimi Lemay (she/hers) is an accomplished author and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights who has dedicated over a decade to advancing equal protections for transgender individuals in Massachusetts and across the United States. Her advocacy work gained national attention through a groundbreaking 2015 NBC Nightly News piece on transgender youth, highlighting her family's journey and commitment to visibility and acceptance.
In 2017, Lemay joined the Parents for Transgender Equality National Council at the Human Rights Campaign, where she continues to serve as an emeritus alumnus, providing guidance and support to other families navigating similar experiences. Her advocacy extends beyond policy work to include powerful storytelling that humanizes transgender experiences and builds understanding across communities.
Her 2019 memoir, "What We Will Become: A Mother, A Son and A Journey of Transformation," was recognized as a 2020 Massachusetts Book Awards finalist, demonstrating how personal narratives can contribute to broader social change. The book chronicles her family's transformation while exploring themes of unconditional love, acceptance, and the courage required to support a transgender child.
Lemay's work particularly focuses on the intersection of her Jewish identity and advocacy for full LGBTQ+ equality, serving on the board of Keshet and the advisory committee for the North Shore region of the New England Anti-Defamation League. Her academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Iran and US Foreign Policy from Boston University and a Master's in Law & Diplomacy from the Fletcher School at Tufts University.
Through her writing, advocacy, and community leadership, Lemay continues to champion the rights and dignity of LGBTQ+ youth while building bridges between faith communities and the broader movement for equality.
