About me
Dr. Basel Touchan is a Syrian‑American physician‑turned‑strategist who rebuilt his life in the United States after fleeing civil war. He now drives systemic change as Affiliate Equity Officer for the ACLU of Kentucky and as a consultant with History UnErased, which brings the first LGBTQ‑inclusive K–12 social studies curriculum to more than 2,000 schools in 18 states.
As a founding architect of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Office in Kentucky’s second‑largest school district, Dr. Touchan developed models that have been adopted nationwide to better serve immigrant, multilingual, and refugee communities across education, government, and nonprofit sectors.
Dr. Touchan serves on the boards of the Lexington‑Fayette County Health Department and the New Americans Initiative, and holds leadership roles with the Mayor’s International Affairs Advisory Commission and the National Council for the Social Studies.
An internationally-accredited mediator and conflict‑resolution trainer, Dr. Touchan speaks globally on belonging, inclusive leadership, and institutional change. His insights appear in TIME magazine, the Guardian, the Washington Blade, and the Journal of Endocrinology & Metabolism.
