About me
Mia Cooley (she/her) is the founder of xHood, an organization dedicated to creating safe, affirming spaces for Black LGBTQ+ parents to connect, build community, and thrive. A proud Black queer woman and mother, Mia is deeply passionate about addressing the unique challenges faced by families at the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality.
Through xHood, Mia has spearheaded initiatives such as retreats, summits, and grant opportunities to support queer parents navigating systemic barriers, reproductive justice, and parenting in a world shaped by anti-Black racism and discriminatory legislation. Under her leadership, xHood has become a beacon of empowerment, providing critical resources, emotional support, and advocacy for historically marginalized families.
Mia’s work extends beyond xHood, as she regularly engages in public speaking and advocacy, including panels like Parenting for the Apocalypse, where she addresses reproductive justice, anti-racism, and the impact of nuclear family norms on Black and queer families. She is also a vocal advocate for inclusive fertility coverage, mental health access, and equity for LGBTQ+ individuals and families in all spaces.
Mia’s efforts have earned recognition for their authenticity, impact, and commitment to fostering joy and resilience in the LGBTQ+ community. She continues to champion intersectional advocacy to ensure no one is left behind.
