Dr. Uchenna Lizmay Umeh, known as "Dr. LuLu," is a Nigerian-born physician, author, speaker, and fierce advocate for LGBTQIA2S+ youth and their families. With an MD, MBA, and designation as a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP), she brings 34 years of professional medical expertise combined with profound personal experience as the proud mother of a transgender daughter.
As founder of Dr. Lulu's Angels Haven, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, she addresses the critical need for safe and affirming homes for unhoused LGBTQ+ youth, with particular focus on Black and Brown transgender children. Her advocacy work has earned national recognition, including conversations with Oprah Winfrey and the Pioneer of the Year award at the 2024 Translife Awards.
Dr. LuLu hosts the "Moms 4 Trans Kids Podcast" and has authored multiple influential books including "How to Raise Well-Rounded Children," "How to Teach Your Children About Racism," and "A Teen's Life," which addresses mental health challenges in marginalized communities. Her upcoming release, "About Your Black Transgender Child," promises to provide comprehensive guidance for parents navigating this journey.
As a three-time TEDx speaker, Dr. LuLu addresses critical topics including childhood trauma and her groundbreaking concept of "inviting in" versus "coming out" for LGBTQ+ individuals. Her TEDx talk "Rethinking the Closet: Coming Out LGBTQ* vs Inviting In" challenges societal norms while encouraging the creation of safer spaces for queer individuals.
