Panel: "ICELAND'S PANEL ON LGBTQ+ AND WOMEN'S RIGHTS: WORKING TOGETHER, RISING TOGETHER"This inspiring panel, moderated by
Iceland's Ambassador to the United States Svanhildur Hólm Valsdóttir, brings together leading voices including
Minister of Industries Hanna Katrín Friðriksson, Reykjavík Pride Chair Helga Haraldsdóttir, and
National Queer Organization of Iceland Chair Bjarndís Helga Tómasdóttir. Together, they will talk about how the fight for gender equality and LGBTQ+ rights can—and must—go hand in hand.
Iceland is often seen as a leader in both areas, but every step forward has come from courage, teamwork, and the hard work of many people. This panel will look at what we’ve learned along the way, what challenges still remain, and how we can keep moving forward—together.
Panelists will talk about:
- Iceland’s journey toward equal rights for women and LGBTQ+ people, from grassroots activism to changes in the law
- How women’s rights and queer movements can support each other
- The role of government in pushing for real, lasting change
- What still needs to be done, even in a country seen as progressive
- The importance of visible queer women in the feminist movement—and how being open to different gender identities and expressions helps all women.
This conversation will bring together different perspectives—from politics to community organizing—with honest reflections on both success and struggle.
Join us for this important and heartfelt talk. It’s a chance to be reminded that real equality happens when we support each other, stay open to difference, and keep moving forward together.
